I had to take a minute out of this holiday weekend to post the link to Gene Burns’ Blog now up on KKSF Newstalk 910-AM website.  I know there are many Gene Burns fans out there who would love to know how he’s doing and what he’s thinking.  Although he is not yet well enough to be on the air, he is still able to communicate with his former listeners in blog form.

We might not agree with the big business mindset of radio stations owned by conglomerates such as Clear Channel and Cumulus Media, but the management at Clear Channel’s KKSF Newstalk 910-AM has shown us that iHeart Radio really does have a heart when it comes to our beloved former KGO hosts.  Sure, they hope to profit from it, by increasing their listenership and ad revenue, but at least their actions show that they might actually care about their listeners and community.

Can’t say that about the Dick-eys of Cumulus Media.

Support your local KKSF Newstalk 910-AM.  Read Gene’s blog and try to listen daily to the programs you like and catch up on missed broadcasts through the archived podcasts.

And, need I say it again, do NOT listen to one second of KGO or any of the other radio station Cumulus Media has destroyed in this market.  NOT ONE SECOND.  Don’t give them a quarter-hour possible rating to show up in any PPM data.  Tell others about how Cumulus Media has come in and destroyed local radio in this market and many other markets.  Tell others how the Dick-eys come into town and fire 30-year on-air talent just to save a buck to put into their own pockets and then serve up syndicated scraps for communities to feed on.  It’s not right!  Give their shareholders a message to refuse to give these Dick-eys one more dime of corporate pay-offs.  Get out now, shareholders!  This is one failing company.

We are SO happy to hear my old friends from kgo on this new station, although by evening the
signal gets weaker to accomodate the local stations – I still listen the “old-fashioned” way on the
radio. We miss Gene Burns and wish him the best, but thank to newstalk 910 for bringing our
friends back on the air!! Hope we hear Len Tillem longer than one hour in the future, but we’ll take what we can get! We hope that KGO has gotten the message – wait until Ronn Owens’ contract is up-he will probably jump ship too!!

    • Hi, Pam. Thanks for the heartfelt comment. I listen both the ‘old-fashioned’ way during the work day from 3:00pm-6:00pm to KKSF Newstalk 910-AM and by podcast when I miss the 3rd hour of what used to be called the ‘Gene Burns Show’. Isn’t it great that Gene Burns is able to keep in touch with everyone and that Gil Gross, Len Tillem, and John Rothmann have a new home? Oh, and Ed Baxter and Rosie Allen too.

I thought I’d see more comments on Gene Burn’s Blog but I noticed it requires Facebook to comment. There are some good comments over on the Facebook page of FormerKGOListeners though. You should check it out. At least you can read those comments without having to have a Facebook account.

where is Gene? How is he doing. I used to listen to him every day back in the 80’s. in Boston. Then when I moved to Burbank I was SHOCKED to hear his voice on the radio in Burbank, but only in certain pockets as he was broadcasting out of S.F. WOW. I was delighted. But then today I began to search for him and learned he had a stroke. Very sad.

    • Hi, Marty. I don’t know if you know the story behind the mass firing at KGO under Cumulus Media. Gene was included in that and the way Cumulus did it was disgraceful. I’ve read reports that, on that day in December 2011, Gene struggled with absorbing the news. I don’t know because I wasn’t there. When KKSF-Newstalk 910-AM offered Gene a show, one that followed Len Tillem in his new slot on KKSF, Gene accepted. Shortly before his on-air date, Gene suffered his stroke and wasn’t able to return to radio (yet). He has a blog on KKSF-Newstalk 910-AM and is recuperating. To its credit, management at KKSF have held up their employment obligation with Gene and when he’s ready to return they will have a job for him. For awhile, all of the former KGO hosts filled-in for Gene until the station selected a regular host for the show – one of the other former KGO hosts, Gil Gross. So, Gene continues to recover and no one has forgotten him. You can read his blog online and listen to Len Tillem and Gil Gross online, all of their shows have podcasts archived going back to the beginning (January 2012). Gil’s show orginated as Gene Burns’ show so you can hear the old podcasts on Gene’s blog page, they are all listed there now (the ones titled under Gene’s Burns Program). You won’t hear Gene, only the guys who filled in for him at the time.

If you want more information, you can go the Facebook page of FormerKGOListeners and they have a Notes section that lists where everyone is now, including Gene.

Thanks for commenting! I really hope we will hear Gene on the air again.
